Describe

The DS3231 is a low-cost, high-accuracy I2C real-time clock (RTC) featuring an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal. The device includes a battery input terminal, enabling precise timekeeping even when the main power supply is disconnected. The integrated crystal enhances long-term accuracy and reduces the number of components required on the production line. The DS3231 is available in commercial- and industrial-grade temperature ranges and is packaged in a 16-pin, 300-mil SO package.
The RTC stores information for seconds, minutes, hours, day of the week, date, month, and year. For months with fewer than 31 days, the end-of-month date is automatically adjusted, including correction for leap years. The clock can operate in either a 24-hour format or a 12-hour format with AM/PM indication. It provides two programmable calendar alarms and one programmable square-wave output. Address and data are transmitted serially over the I2C bidirectional bus.
A precision, temperature-compensated voltage reference and comparator circuit is used to monitor the VCC status, detect
power-supply faults, generate a reset output, and automatically switch to the backup power supply when necessary. In addition, the /RST monitoring pin can serve as a manual input for generating a microprocessor reset.
In addition to its high timing accuracy, the DS3231 offers several other features that expand the system host’s functionality and design options. The device integrates a highly accurate digital temperature sensor that can be accessed via the I2C* interface—just like the timekeeping function. This temperature sensor has an accuracy of ±3°C. An on-chip control circuit provides automatic power-supply detection and manages seamless switching between the main power supply and the backup power source (i.e., a low-voltage battery). Even if the main power supply fails, the device continues to provide precise timing and temperature readings without any degradation in performance. When the main power is restored or the supply voltage returns to within the allowable range, the on-chip reset function can be used to restart the system microprocessor.
