Product Description:

A4988 is a complete micro-stepping motor driver with built-in translator for easy operation. This product can operate bipolar stepper motors with full, half, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 step modes, with output drive capacity of up to 35 V and ±2A. It includes a fixed off-time current regulator, either in slow or mixed decay modes. A4988 converter is a simplified implementation with no need of phase sequence tables, high frequency control lines or complex interfaces to program. This makes it ideal for use in occasions where a complex microprocessor is unavailable or is overburdened.

In the micro-step operation, A4988's internal chopping control automatically selects the current decay mode (slow or mixed). The mixed decay mode provides a fixed off time for fast decay, and then the rest of the off time is in slow decay. This current control scheme results in reduced audible noise from the motor, higher step accuracy and power conservation.

Power sequencing can be made easy with the internal synchronous rectification control circuitry. This ensures improved pulse-width modulation (PWM) power consumption. Other protection features include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout (UVLO) and crossover-current protection.

A4988 comes in a QFN package of 5 mm × 5 mm, with a nominal overall package height of 0.90 mm. The exposed pad at the bottom of the package allows for better thermal dissipation. The Pb(suffix-T) package is covered with 100% matte tin lead frame plating.

3.3 and 5V Compatible Logic Supply

The device supports both 3.3V and 5V logic lines, which can be adjusted according to system requirements.

Ground Fault and Load Short-Circuit Protection

The device also features protection against ground fault and load short-circuit losses.

Optional Step Five Modes

The device also offers an optional five modes of stepping, namely: full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16.

 

Technical Parameters:

When using engraving machines or 3D printers, there are basic needs of the stepper motor control pins, like the figure shown above. For the expansion board UNO, these pins correspond to the following: EN (stepper motor drive enable, active low), Z.DIR (Z axis direction control), Y.DIR (Y-axis direction control), X.DIR (X-axis direction control), Z.STEP (Z-axis stepper control), Y.STEP (Y-axis stepper control) and X.STEP (X-axis stepper control).

In this program, one can control the direction, as well as the number of steps for each stepper motor. To enable these control, the setup will set the pins used for the stepper motor in output mode, and turn on the enable, so that the board can start. In the loop, the command of step can control the stepper motor’s direction, number of steps, and it is used for reversing lap and transferring lap.
